Dave Weindorf was born in 1962 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He's a self-taught, abstract expressionist artist. He became interested in art when his mother gave him a print of Dali's "Last Supper" as a young boy. Early in his art path he focused on 19th and 20th century abstract and surrealism. In recent years he's devoted a lot of time to studying post-modern art and is an avid reader of art history. Dave has exhibited his work in Michigan’s ArtPrize, Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Lowell Arts Gallery, Traverse Higher Art Exhibition, and Pace Galleries in New York. His work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine, a juried artist book. Dave is represented by Agora Gallery of New York. He lives with his wife and dog, Dusty, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
My artwork is heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian symbols, cave art and Viking runes, expressed as primitive glyphs and line work. I've always been fascinated with hieroglyphics and cave drawings, their meaning feeling hidden to me. Artists and work I've been drawn to include Dali, Picasso, Miro and Kandinsky.
In terms of my artistic process, I work with contrasting paints--watercolor and acrylic enamel. I prefer using vintage paints, when I can find them, because I feel the color is more vivid and has a sharper definition. My process is intuitive and reactionary, starting with how I create the background using watercolor and then create layers of line work and color. For my line work I turn a thin paint brush upside down, dip it in the paint and move it over the canvas and let it flow as I create the abstract marks.
